In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we spotlight our Deputy Superintendent/Chief of Staff Ronald Jones! 👏 See his responses to our spotlight questions below or by visiting tylerisd.org/bhm What inspired you to become an educator? "The educator inspiration for me came as a teenager from having a summer job at a residential facility for special needs individuals. I decided then to become a special education teacher. Low and behold, I finished college with a degree in Computer Info Systems/Business Administration. Fast forward three years and I found myself right where I should have been all along, a special education teacher. Being an educator is a calling." What is the importance of Black History Month? "Celebrating Black History Month presents a chance for today's youth to learn of the awesome contributions African Americans have made throughout the history of the United States in all areas. Black History Month serves as a self-worth builder, motivation to always strive for excellence for minority students, particularly African American students, and shines a light on the fact students have the ability and opportunity to do and become anything they desire to be—hard work pays off." In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we spotlight our Chief of School Leadership, Dr. Johnita Ward! 👏 Get to know her by reading her responses to our spotlight questions below or visiting tylerisd.org/bhm What inspired you to become an educator? "My father inspired me to become an educator. He dedicated 54 years of his life to education and I watched him devote countless hours mentoring and educating children, especially those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. He understood that children need caring adults who are invested in them and their learning. His impact on our small community was massive, and I realized at an early age that I too wanted to have a positive impact on others as an educator." What is the importance of Black History Month? "Black History Month is a powerful reminder that Black History is American history. It is essential to the ongoing story of America’s fight for freedom, progress, and our aspirations. Celebrating Black History Month is a wonderful time to honor the contributions, sacrifices, and legacy of African Americans that played an integral role in shaping our great nation." In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we spotlight Jones Elementary's Principal, Dr. NaTasha Crain! 👏 Get to know her by reading her responses to our spotlight questions below or visiting tylerisd.org/bhm What inspired you to become an educator? "My 5th grade teacher asked, 'Do you want to be a leader or stay in the background? If you want to show the world how smart you are, you are going to have to speak up.' Those words have stuck with me to this day. I wanted to encourage others that look like me to speak up and take advantage of all the opportunities available that education can provide. As an educator and a leader my goal is to improve the lives of others through service and leave an on-going legacy of achievement." What is the importance of Black History Month? "Black History Month provides a moment to recognize the achievements and success of those who have persevered and shown resiliency in spite of the many challenges faced. In our school community, when our students learn about and see the hard work and great things people right here in our local community have accomplished, you can see their eyes light up with hope and excitement in knowing the possibilities of what they also can do and become if they stay focused and goal driven…Representation really does matter." Out of an extraordinary and extreme abundance of caution for our students and staff, listening to local and national weather predictions for a Winter Storm, power irregularities, and limited but questionable rural bridge conditions, we regretfully make the call to close Tyler ISD schools for the day. We look forward to welcoming our students and staff back for a normal school day starting at the regular time on Thursday, February 2nd. Thank you again for you flexibility and patience. #safeTisd

We will release school early today by 30 minutes to allow our buses plenty of time to safely transport students home and get our drivers back to the parking lot while it is still light outside and before the next round of precipitation hits our area. Mentoring Alliance after-school programs will still be held on campuses. However, they encourage parents to pick up their children as soon as possible. Please check with your coach or sponsor if you have any extracurricular after-school activities, as practices and games in Tyler will still occur. Thank you so much for your flexibility as we make the best decisions for all our students and staff. #safeTisd

Tyler ISD will have a normal school day as scheduled. As always, our buses will use extreme caution when transporting our students. Please know that we have a plan in place and that some buses may be rerouted to avoid any areas of slight concern. Please remember that for some of our students keeping schools open means that they will have a warm place to go today and a hot meal. We appreciate your patience! #safeTisd

We will continue to monitor the weather conditions this evening and through the night. If a delay or closure is needed, you will be informed by 5:15 a.m. through Tyler ISD Facebook, TylerISD.org, the Tyler ISD app, and the parent notification system per our inclement weather procedures. Please know that we drive the roads as early as 4:00 a.m. to ensure the streets are safe. For some students, closing our facilities means they may not have access to a heated and safe environment or hot meals for the day. When deciding to delay or cancel classes, our District leadership team considers the best interests of all Tyler ISD students, families, and staff. #safeTisd

Let's continue School Board Recognition Month by recognizing Wade Washmon! 🏛️ Thank you for the time you spend volunteering to ensure Successful Student Outcomes. 🎓 Here's why he does! 👏 "For me, it's about serving the students and community by striving to be a reasonable voice in a world where education is increasingly politicized and scrutinized. I love Tyler, TX, and the people who live here as much as anybody, it's home, and it's so important to me to keep our focus on where it needs to be, successful student outcomes. In my time on the board, I’ve realized just how delicate a functional and healthy school board and the District really are. And I'm proud to serve on a board where we're dedicated to handling our business quietly and respectfully, putting people over politics every day of the week."
