By now, you've probably received your appraisal notice, but did you know that Texas public schools don’t benefit from rising property values? When you pay more, the state pays less. Tyler ISD’s per-student funding is the same this year as it was in 2019-20, even though homeowners’ tax bills are up more than 9%. The last time the state of Texas increased per-student funding for public schools was in 2019. Since then, the Consumer Price Index, which measures inflation, has risen 17%. Just like households and businesses, schools have experienced a drastic increase in fixed costs since 2019. In Tyler ISD, health insurance is up 9.5%, fuel is up 36%, and general insurance policies are up 2.4%. As the legislature considers the state budget for the next biennium, Tyler ISD is calling on lawmakers to #FundTexasSchools because funding that doesn’t keep up with inflation means fewer opportunities for students. School buses will be a little delayed this afternoon due to the weather. Bus drivers are following our safety protocols regarding these storms. Student safety is the priority, so our drivers will take extra precautions to get them home safely.
