Friday was such a fun room transformation! Sixth-grade math got a makeover at Three Lakes Middle School. Math teacher, Ms. Arrington, transformed her classroom into an operating room to teach her students how to solve expressions using the order of operations.

"Since it is the order of ’operations,’ my room was set up like an operating room,” Ms. Arrington said. "Students solved different problems, each representing an injury or surgery. When they solved it correctly, they got to play one round of the game Operation. My goal was for students to have some buy-in and find that even difficult concepts can be mastered with a little fun!"

Students completed approximately 15 order of operations problems in about 60 minutes - far more than they would have completed on a normal worksheet. They were successful and they persisted when they made mistakes. The students had a lot of fun but also put in much-needed practice. Ms. Arrington received many parent messages saying that the operating room is all they heard about Friday afternoon.

“I am thankful that Mrs. Sherman encourages me to be creative and to shine in my position,” Arrington said. I could not experience all of the success without her.”
