young, white female holds artwork she created - a tree with blue background and snowman sitting under it

The Tyler Trees Committee and the City of Tyler Urban Forestry Division hosted two tree planting events celebrating Arbor Day on Saturday, January 29, at Bergfeld and T.R. Griffith parks. They also hosted a competition for school-age children to submit Arbor Day-themed artwork leading up to the events.

The Rice Elementary Rangers celebrated as one of their 1st-grade students won the 2022 Arbor Day Art Contest. Cora Garvey was all smiles when she was awarded first place for her original art creation featuring a snowman nestled under a beautiful tree. Her family was excited and amazed that her artwork was printed on over 200 t-shirts given away at the events!

When art teacher Jamie Williams asked her student how she felt when she won 1st place, she replied, "Weird, happy, and surprised!"

"Our art teacher, Ms. Williams, always does a phenomenal job helping students express themselves through art," Principal Smiley said. "She is very student-focused and is extremely proud of Cora for her artwork being selected."

"We are very excited for Rice Elementary Ranger, Cora," Tyler ISD Director of Fine Arts Sandra Newton added.
