Tyler ISD seniors recently celebrated Decision Day 2021 with their classmates. Decision Day 2021 is an initiative aligned with National College Decision Day to celebrate all seniors whose post-secondary plans include a four-year university, community college, certification program, trade school, or the military.

National College Decision Day, when students must inform colleges of their plan to enroll, is May 1. To celebrate the decisions and plans students have for after high school graduation, Tyler ISD seniors celebrated their own Decision Day 2021. Legacy High School, RISE Academy, and Early College High School held their Decision Day festivities on May 3. Tyler High celebrated on Friday, May 7. Sponsored by the Tyler ISD AVID College and Career department and the Tyler Area Business Education Council, each high school celebrated differently. Still, all had the same goal of creating a fun atmosphere that showcased each student’s plan after graduation.

Tyler ISD AVID Coordinator Lillian Brooks says, “Decision Day supports the District’s continued focus on college and career preparation within our schools. It is important that every student have an opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments, whatever avenue they are choosing to take.”

Students wore their college gear as they each signed informal agreements to attend and excel at their chosen college, program, or military branch. More than 200 students participated.

“We use the term ‘college’ to refer to the attainment of high-quality credentials beyond high school, including technical certificates and academic degrees,” LaToya Young, executive director of the Tyler Area Business Education Council, said. “We believe that every student has the opportunity to achieve an education beyond high school and prosper in Tyler’s robust economy.”
