For Jesse Darden, a 2016 graduate of John Tyler High School, a journey that began in Tyler ISD classrooms has grown into a successful culinary career. Today, Darden serves as Market Executive Chef for Sodexo Health & Care at UT Health East Texas, overseeing food production operations across eight hospitals.

Darden’s path began at Dixie Elementary School and Hogg Middle School before he continued his education at John Tyler High School. When Tyler ISD opened the Career & Technology Center (CTC), Darden was among its first culinary students, an experience that helped shape his future.

β€œThe CTC gave me real-world experience at an early age and introduced me to the culinary field in a hands-on environment,” Darden said. β€œIt helped me understand what to expect in the industry and gave me a head start in both confidence and skills going into my career.”

After graduating, Darden joined UT Health East Texas, formerly ETMC, as a food service representative. In this entry-level role, he learned the fundamentals of hospital food service, including delivering patient meals. His dedication and work ethic eventually led him to the kitchen, where he became a sous chef and continued developing his culinary and food production skills.

Through hard work and a commitment to growth, Darden advanced into executive leadership. In his current role, he oversees menu standardization, team development, food safety compliance and purchasing. He also collaborates with culinary leaders and professionals throughout the market to strengthen operations and maintain high standards across the hospital system.

While building his career, Darden continued investing in his education. He earned an associate degree in general studies from Tyler Junior College and has since returned to pursue an associate degree in business to further strengthen his management skills.

From gaining hands-on experience at the CTC to leading culinary operations across eight hospitals, Darden’s journey reflects the value of career and technical education, continued learning and dedication to professional growth. His story highlights how Tyler ISD students can turn early opportunities into meaningful careers.

Favorite Memory: One of my favorite memories was being part of the football and track programs at John Tyler. From Friday night lights to all-day track and field competitions, the discipline, teamwork, and accountability built through athletics carried over into everything I do today. Being surrounded by coaches and teammates who pushed me to be better helped shape my mindset early on.

What teacher made the biggest impact on your life and why? Athletic Director, Ricklan Holmes. Coach Holmes instilled in me the heart of a lion and the passion I have today. He taught us that no matter what you do in life, give it your all. More importantly, he showed me how to carry myself as a man and how to build a strong foundation early on to set myself up for success.

Advice to current Tyler ISD students: Always believe in yourself, no matter how big your dreams are; the only person holding you back is you. If you can dream it, you can achieve it. One of my favorite quotes is, β€œThe person who thinks they can and the person who thinks they can’t are both right.
