The sounds, rhythms, and traditions of Hispanic heritage filled Ramey Elementary School as students, staff, families, and community members came together for the schoolβs annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration, Herencia Hispana. Centered on the theme βAre You Listening?,β the celebration highlighted how music and the arts connect cultures, preserve traditions, and bring communities together.

Fourth-grade students took center stage, showcasing their musical talents through singing, dancing, percussion, rhythm sticks, tubano drums, and xylophones. Directed and coordinated by music teacher LePatrick Thomas, the performances connected classroom learning with an authentic performance experience, allowing students to demonstrate their skills in rhythm, movement, musical expression, and collaboration.
A highlight of the program was Herencia Hispana, an original composition written by Thomas. Students also brought Latin American musical traditions to life through βSamba Time,β featuring rhythm and movement, and a performance of βSon de la Negra,β a traditional Mexican selection presented through student dance.

The celebration also featured a special faculty performance of βCielito Lindo,β with Mr. Mendoza on guitar and Ms. Chavez providing vocals. Throughout the campus, student artwork inspired by Hispanic heritage and cultural traditions added another dimension to the celebration.

Following the evening performance, families and community members enjoyed a Hispanic Heritage Fall Festival featuring a live DJ, karaoke, cultural maker stations, face painting, interactive games, photo opportunities, and food and refreshments provided by the PTA.
Through music, dance, visual arts, and family engagement, Ramey Elementary created an opportunity for students to build confidence, express their creativity, and develop an appreciation for the traditions and stories that shape different cultures. The celebration reinforced the power of the arts to connect generations, strengthen school-community relationships, and create meaningful learning experiences beyond the classroom.
