Today, two athletic trainers were recognized for the quick thinking and decisive action that helped save a Tyler Legacy High School football player’s life.
Braxton Gahan, the CHRISTUS-employed athletic trainer assigned to Tyler Legacy, and Tyler ISD athletic trainer Aaron Gibson were recognized during CHRISTUS Health’s monthly operations meeting for their response during a football practice last week.
While practice was underway, a Legacy football player experienced a sudden medical emergency. Gahan reached the athlete within seconds and immediately activated the school’s Emergency Action Plan, directing a coach to call 911 and a student to retrieve the AED while beginning CPR.
Gibson arrived moments later with the AED. The two trainers continued their response until EMS arrived and helped facilitate a smooth transfer of care.
Their response highlights the importance of preparation, emergency planning and having the right equipment ready when seconds matter.
