Students in an 18+ CONNECT class at the Wayne D. Boshears Center are building valuable life skills through hands-on cooking experiences in the Home Skills classroom.

For CONNECT students, learning to prepare food is about much more than following a recipe. Each cooking activity provides an opportunity to develop independence, confidence, communication, teamwork, and practical skills that can be used in everyday life.

As students work together in the kitchen, they practice gathering ingredients, measuring, mixing, following step-by-step directions, using kitchen tools safely, and cleaning their workspace. Students participate at a level appropriate for their individual abilities and goals, allowing everyone to experience success and take an active role in the cooking process.
These hands-on experiences also provide meaningful opportunities to practice vocational and independent living skills in a real-world setting. Students make choices, complete tasks, solve problems, communicate with others, and learn the importance of working as a team.

From preparing simple recipes to cleaning up afterward, every step is an opportunity to learn and grow. Students are developing skills that can help them become more confident and independent in their homes, workplaces, and communities.
We are proud of the effort, teamwork, and enthusiasm our CONNECT students demonstrate each time they step into the kitchen. Their accomplishments remind us that with meaningful opportunities and the right support, our students are capable of so much!
Way to go, CONNECT!
