Two educators from Birdwell Dual Language Immersion School have been recognized for their outstanding leadership and commitment to Emergent Bilingual (EB) students, earning two of the highest honors presented at the annual EBCon Conference at Region 7.
Middle school dual language teacher Alejandro Zapico received the prestigious Mover of Mountains Award, while Principal Mina Naranjo received the Loyal Leader of the Year Award.
The Mover of Mountains Award celebrates experienced teachers who inspire and engage EB students through innovative instruction, collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders to improve educational outcomes, and continually seek new strategies to transform teaching and learning. Three finalists are selected annually from nominations submitted by peers before one recipient is announced during the conference.
The Loyal Leader of the Year Award recognizes campus and district administrators who cultivate safe, welcoming schools where students' cultures and languages are valued and celebrated. Honorees are recognized for supporting educators through equitable practices, promoting continuous learning, and sharing research and resources that strengthen educational communities.
“This recognition is a reflection of the incredible students, families, and staff I have the privilege of working alongside every day,” said Birdwell Principal Mina Naranjo. “I am especially proud of Mr. Zapico for earning the Mover of Mountains Award. His passion for bilingual education, dedication to our students, and commitment to helping every child succeed make him truly deserving of this honor. I am grateful to be part of a campus where we celebrate our students' languages, cultures, and limitless potential.”
As a dual language immersion campus, Birdwell is dedicated to developing bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural learners through high-quality instruction that empowers students to succeed academically while celebrating their linguistic and cultural identities.
Zapico's classroom is known for engaging instruction that encourages students to think critically, collaborate, and build confidence in both English and Spanish. His commitment to continuous growth and innovative teaching strategies has helped countless students thrive while inspiring fellow educators.
Under Naranjo's leadership, Birdwell has continued to foster a campus culture where every student feels valued, respected, and supported. Her leadership has strengthened collaboration among staff, elevated instructional practices, and reinforced the school's commitment to equity and excellence for all learners.
