Early College High School (ECHS) is officially kicking off the academic year early with its annual Summer Bridge event. Designed to ease the transition into a more rigorous academic environment, the week-long program helps incoming freshmen acclimate to campus, build community, and settle their pre-high school nerves.

"All of these students applied to be at Early College High School, meaning they want an associate’s degree at the same time they graduate high school," said Principal Amanda Hortman. "We are going to help them do that for free, which means this opportunity should not be taken lightly."

To balance all the hard work ahead, the event combines academic preparation with fun team-building activities. Students spend their days practicing for the TSI, a state-mandated exam they must pass to take college classes in 9th grade, while also competing in creative group competitions.

"Today, for example, we have a duct tape challenge to see if the students can think outside of the box and craft a functional tool," said Hortman. "The students will receive points for doing well in the games, passing the TSI, and just having an overall good attitude throughout the event."

A recycled fashion show and a scavenger hunt were also among the planned activities.

By combining crucial test prep with collaborative games, the Summer Bridge event ensures these motivated students are fully equipped to launch their college journey the moment the school bell rings.
