Tyler ISD has named Whitney Smith the district’s Golf Coordinator and the next Boys Golf Head Coach at Tyler Legacy High School. Coach Smith has been with Tyler ISD since August 2023, teaching at Jack Elementary School.

β€œI’m grateful for the opportunity to open the golf facility and lead the golf program at Tyler ISD,” said Smith. β€œWith the resources we have, the sky is truly the limit, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Smith was an established collegiate golfer at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, where she competed on a full scholarship for the Islanders from 2002 to 2006. She started her coaching career as a Graduate Assistant for the program in 2006-07. From there, she served as the Head Women’s Golf Coach at Texas A&M University-Victoria, formerly the University of Houston-Victoria.

β€œWe are excited to welcome Whitney Smith as our new Golf Coordinator and Head Boys Golf Coach at Tyler Legacy High School,” Tyler ISD Athletic Director Sam Gillispie said. β€œCoach Smith brings a strong passion for developing student-athletes, building relationships, and growing the game of golf across our district. We are confident that her leadership, vision, and commitment to excellence will have a tremendous impact on our golf programs. We look forward to the future of Tyler ISD Golf under her direction.”

Smith comes from a strong golf background. Her father, Jeff Stromgren, has served as a golf head coach at both the high school and collegiate levels, including as Head Men’s Golf Coach at Washburn University. Her sister, Adin, also competed collegiately at Wichita State University.

Coach Smith is married to Tyler Legacy Boys Basketball Head Coach Kyle Smith, and they have three children, Sloane, Cannon, and Jett.
