Students at Owens Elementary recently had a unique opportunity to step beyond the classroom and into the world of local government. As members of the school’s Student Lighthouse Team, these young leaders participated in an engaging experience that allowed them to observe city government in action and connect directly with city council members during a special meet-and-greet.

The visit provided students with a firsthand look at how decisions are made within their community. By seeing city leaders at work, students were able to better understand the responsibilities and impact of public service. The experience brought their leadership lessons to life, transforming abstract concepts into real-world examples they could see and relate to.

During the meet-and-greet, students had the chance to ask questions, share ideas, and learn about the paths city council members took to reach their roles. These conversations helped students recognize that leadership is not limited to the classroomβ€”it can grow into meaningful opportunities that shape communities and influence change.

This experience also reinforced the purpose of the Student Lighthouse Team, which focuses on developing leadership skills such as communication, responsibility, and teamwork. By connecting their current roles to future possibilities, students began to see how the skills they are building today can evolve into careers and contributions in government and beyond.

Opportunities like this inspire students to think bigger about their potential. Owens Elementary continues to empower its students to lead, serve, and envision a future where their voices and actions make a lasting impact.
