The Animal Science program at the Career & Technology Center (CTC) continues to grow, offering students hands-on learning and industry-recognized certifications that prepare them for careers in veterinary medicine, livestock production, and animal care. Through advanced coursework and real-world training, students gain practical experience that mirrors professional animal-care settings.

As part of that hands-on approach, Tyler ISD Animal Science and Veterinary Technician students recently hosted a Doggy Daycare event for district employeesβ dogs. Under instructor supervision, students provided basic grooming and care services while practicing proper animal handling, communication, and professionalism in a real-world environment.

Skills taught in Veterinary Medical Applications mirror those used by veterinary assistants, technicians, and veterinarians, including animal handling and restraint, clinical and nursing care, laboratory testing, imaging and diagnostics, surgical and anesthesia support, dental care, infection control, sanitation, and client communication.
βOver the last 11 years, Iβve had the privilege of witnessing the animal science program evolve into a strong, innovative, and respected program of study,β Animal Science teacher Lindsay Griffin said. βWhat started small has become a program defined by curiosity, commitment, and a genuine respect for animals and science.β

Students in Level III Advanced Animal Science and Livestock Production can earn the ELANCO Fundamentals of Animal Science Certificate, while Level IV Veterinary Science students can earn the ELANCO Veterinary Medical Applications Certificate, a PetTech credential focused on emergency medical skills for small animals. Approximately 20 students also participate in a rigorous and thorough Cattle Care and Handling training at the famous King Ranch, where they can earn the Texas Cattle Feeders Association Feedyard Technician Certificate.
Seniors can also earn the Certified Veterinary Assistant credential, a comprehensive certification requiring extensive classroom instruction, a supervised veterinary hospital internship, demonstrated mastery of hands-on technician skills, and successful completion of the state exam. Students who earn this certification are prepared to seek employment in veterinary clinics immediately after graduation.
Through continued growth, strong community partnerships, and career-focused learning, the Tyler ISD Animal Science program equips students with the skills and confidence needed for success beyond high school.
February marks Career and Technical Education Month as Tyler ISD celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Career & Technology Center, a hub for hands-on learning, industry certifications, and 25 career pathways.
