Tyler ISD Project SEARCH 18+ interns spent a valuable day at Cooperative Teachers Credit Union (CTCU), where they worked closely with Meghan Reily, the Marketing & Business Development Manager, to develop essential financial skills that will support their futures as independent working adults. Project SEARCH is a renowned international program designed to empower young adults with diverse abilities by providing meaningful internship experiences that prepare them for competitive employment. This visit to CTCU was a prime example of the hands-on learning opportunities the program offers.

During the visit, the interns learned important concepts such as interest rates, overdraft fees, and the difference between needs and wants, and how these factors influence personal budgeting. They also had the chance to practice real-world banking skills, including using the ATM and taking a tour of the credit union. Many interns received personalized, one-on-one assistance to open their very first bank accounts, a milestone step toward financial independence. Additionally, the students completed a budgeting exercise using actual costs and calculations, giving them a practical understanding of managing money in everyday life.
