Elementary students at the Wayne D. Boshears Center began their exciting farm unit, exploring where foods come from and how they grow. The classroom has been buzzing with excitement as students dive into hands-on lessons that bring the farm-to-table concept to life.

To kick off the unit, students plucked ripe tomatoes straight from the vine, engaging their senses as they explored the color, shape, and smell of the fruit. They were fascinated to see what was inside after cutting the tomatoes open - discovering the soft texture, juicy inside, and tiny seeds that help new tomato plants grow. Using a tomato half, students also created bright red art prints, stamping them on paper to make beautiful farm-inspired artwork.

Each day adds a new layer of learning as students explore a variety of fresh produce. Lessons this week include picking apples, pulling carrots and radishes from the soil, and shucking corn. These experiences not only teach students about plant growth and healthy foods but also help strengthen fine motor, sensory, and communication skills.

Through these interactive activities, students are gaining a deeper understanding of where their food comes from while building sensory, fine motor, and communication skills. The farm unit has turned the classroom into a lively space of discovery, curiosity, and fun!
