Tyler Legacy High School Theatre students experienced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity when they attended βAn Evening with Rob Loweβ at The University of Texas at Tylerβs Cowan Center. The visit, arranged by the Tyler Legacy Theatre Booster Club, brought the cast and crew of The Outsiders face-to-face with the Hollywood actor whose iconic film inspired their upcoming production.
βWhen we found out that Rob Lowe was going to be in town the week before our performances, we knew we had to arrange something special for our cast and crew,β said Booster Club President Jana Slaughter, who coordinated with Loweβs publicist and the Cowan Center to make the event possible. The Cowan Center graciously provided 50 free seats for the theatre students, as well as the opportunity for a meet and greet after the show.
During his on-stage interview, Lowe gave a special shout-out to the Tyler Legacy group, saying, βI heard weβve got some Outsiders in the house tonight.β The students erupted with excitement as the house lights briefly illuminated their section. He went on to highlight the importance of high school theatre, emphasizing that the skills learned on stage are βinvaluable.β
Following the event, Lowe greeted the students, shaking hands and sharing a memorable exchange with Tyler Legacyβs Sodapop, Jasper Christian. βUs Sodas got to stick together,β Lowe said with a grin.
One particularly touching moment came when student Lyla, who is hearing impaired, shared with Lowe that his openness about being born deaf in one ear has been an inspiration to her. The heartfelt interaction capped off an unforgettable evening of inspiration and connection for the young performers.
