Higinio Fernandez-Sanchez’s journey started right here in Tyler, and today, he’s making a global impact on the world of healthcare!

A proud 2006 graduate of John Tyler High School, Higinio first earned a science degree from Tyler Junior College in 2008. He then moved to Mexico, where he followed his passion for helping others by earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing (2013) and a master’s degree in nursing (2016).

After a decade abroad, Higinio continued to chase his dreams, heading to Canada to complete his Ph.D. in nursing at the University of Albertaβ€”ranked the #1 nursing school in Canada and one of the top five in the world! He earned his doctorate in 2023.

Today, Higinio is a Nurse Scientist at the University of Texas Health Science Center Houston, Cizik School of Nursing, where he’s helping to shape the next generation of nursing leaders.

Looking back on his time in Tyler ISD, Higinio says the skills and support he received from first grade through graduation helped prepare him for the many challenges and opportunities he faced along the way.

During high school, he proudly participated in JROTC, building leadership skills that have served him throughout his career.

Favorite Memory: Every November 11th, which happens to be my birthday, I was always involved in some activity in JROTC. Those were fun times.

What teacher made the biggest impact on your life and why? Mr. Joel Enge, my fifth-grade teacher at T.J. Austin Elementary, had a profound impact on my life. He was an outstanding educator who genuinely cared about the growth and success of his students. Energetic and always going the extra mile, he created an environment where we felt supported and motivated. He was never intimidating, just the opposite. He inspired us with his kindness, dedication, and belief in our potential.

Advice to current Tyler ISD students: There’s so much I could say, but one of the most important pieces of advice is to find a mentor, whether it’s a family member, a friend, or a former teacher. These individuals can support not only your academic journey but also your personal development. Stay focused, be persistent, and remember: the Yeses will come. You never know what’s possible unless you try.
