Sixteen Human Services Practicum students at the Career and Technology Center successfully completed the State of Texas Community Health Worker (CHW) certification course through a partnership with UT Health Science Center. Now officially certified, these students are prepared to enter a wide range of roles that support community well-being, including health education, chronic disease prevention, maternal and mental health support, elder care, and community outreach.
The CHW certification course provided students with essential knowledge and hands-on experience in areas such as connecting individuals with local resources, promoting healthy lifestyles, and understanding how nonprofits function in service to the community. The curriculum also focused on building leadership, advocacy, and communication skillsβkey tools for any professional in the human services field.
βI was taught how to empower others by using skills like advocacy, health education, counseling, and outreach to help community members become self-sufficient and healthy,β recent graduate Brianna Tope said. βIt was really helpful learning how to motivate people to be more independent and encourage their personal growth.β
Graduate Julia Herren added, βOne of the biggest things I learned in the CHW course was how to engage in my community. I gained a sense of leadership and confidence through this course and pathway, something that I lacked before.β
These students are now equipped to make meaningful impacts in our community and beyond. Visit the CTC website to learn more about the 13 Career Pathways offered, including Family and Community Services.
