Parent liaisons for Birdwell Dual Language Immersion School hosted a CPR course for parents presented by Tyler ISD Health Services. Birdwell’s campus liaisons conducted a parent interest survey and the results showed the most interest in Basic Skills in First Aid. Twenty parents registered for the course led by Tyler ISD Health Services staff in both languages by Ms. Rachel Barber and bilingual nurse Mrs. Melanie Mills.

Parents were highly engaged and interested in learning CPR skills and the Heimlich maneuver for adults and infants during the class. They asked thoughtful questions about first aid and emergency response in their homes.  The course was interactive and hands-on. Participants received focused instruction and feedback to perfect their performance.

“I feel they all left better equipped to handle emergencies should they encounter them,” Tyler ISD Director of Health Services Rachel Barber said.  “We were honored to be able to provide this first-ever Basic Skills in First Aid Course training for the Birdwell parents.”

This course is the first of many scheduled for the school year. “We just came and taught the skills,” added Barber. “We plan to teach more classes at other campuses as many have requested after seeing the Birdwell story on Facebook.”
