Orr Elementary School's Black History Month Program packed the house with students, parents, guardians, and distinguished guests.

Principal Lauren Smith welcomed everyone and after the pledges and Black National Anthem (Lift Every Voice and Sing), a representative of the Divine Nine Black Sororities and Fraternities, energized everyone with upbeat music and dance moves.

The Tyler High Jazz band and choir both performed for their "Cubs" (Orr Elementary School feeds into Tyler High, and students become "Lions").

A moving Praise Dance performance from fifth graders and Head Start group tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King garnered cheers and applause.

Before the closing, the first African American President of the Smith County Historical Society, Mr. Larry Wade Sr., gave an informative and inspirational speech.

"Your DNA connects you to your ancestors back to the beginning of time," he told students. "Be proud of your race and where you came from and thankful for those raising you."

He left them with these powerful words, "Inside of you, I want you to remember you are a hidden treasure. Time, hard work, and getting good grades can lead to success. You have greatness inside you!"
