high school students standing on stage singing songs

Tyler High School staff and students invited the community to celebrate Black History Month with memorable musical and choir performances, a reception, and an expo with over 25 local businesses and organizations, including the Smith County African American Historical Society and members of the Divine Nine, the umbrella organization housing Black Greek-letter organizations.

The event opened with the Jazz Band and Choir welcoming the community with their talent.  Students recited the “I Have a Dream” speech by Martin Luther King Jr. Mr. Dexter Jones shared words of wisdom and encouragement followed by the vendor expo and refreshments. The Expo also included food options and local businesses. The engaged audience participated with trivia questions and won raffle prizes.

This was a very moving, inspiring and fun event. A great success that the campus plans to continue in the future.
