Student looking at a pumpkin

Students at The Wayne D. Boshears Center celebrated the fall season with a hands-on Pumpkin Investigation led by classroom teacher Sarah Kolac. The activity gave students the opportunity to explore pumpkins using all their senses while working together in a fun and engaging science lesson.

During the investigation, students examined the outside and inside of pumpkins, noticing their color, shape, and texture. With support, they scooped out the seeds, counted them, and compared the sizes of different pumpkins. Students also participated in a science experiment to discover whether pumpkins float or sink in water. Their excitement and curiosity filled the room as they watched the pumpkins float to the top of the bin!

Many of the students are non-verbal and used their communication devices, gestures, and facial expressions to share what they observed and enjoyed. The lesson encouraged interaction, sensory exploration, and communication while reinforcing math and science concepts in a meaningful way.

The Pumpkin Investigation was a wonderful seasonal learning experience that combined teamwork, discovery, and joyβ€”perfectly capturing the spirit of fall at The Boshears Center.
