What began as a part-time job during high school at the Chick-fil-A in Broadway Square Mall has become a lifelong career and calling for Jill Johnson, a 2000 graduate of John Tyler High School. While enrolled in Tyler ISD’s International Baccalaureate program, Johnson balanced rigorous coursework with her job, learning early on the values of discipline, teamwork, and leadership.

At the time, she had no idea how central Chick-fil-A would become in her life. In addition to gaining professional skills, she also met her future husband while working there. His passion for the business grew throughout high school and college, ultimately leading him to become an owner/operator after graduation. Together, the couple co-owned a franchise in San Antonio for two years before returning to their hometown of Tyler, where they successfully operated the Broadway Square Mall location for 14 years. Today, they proudly own the Lindale/North Tyler Chick-fil-A, where Johnson continues to contribute wherever she is needed.

One of the greatest blessings of this work, Johnson says, is the flexibility it provides to focus on raising their childrenβ€”proud Tyler ISD studentsβ€”while also supporting the family business. Beyond her role with Chick-fil-A, she is deeply engaged in the community, serving on the Tyler ISD Foundation Board, the Tyler Public Library Advisory Board, the Women’s Fund of Smith County, and the Women’s Symphony League of Tyler. Through their business, the Johnsons also support local organizations such as Bethesda Health Clinic, helping to invest in the community they are proud to call home.

After graduating from John Tyler, Johnson attended Baylor University, earning her degree early thanks to the college credits she accrued through AP and IB classes. She went on to complete a Master of Arts in Education with a Reading and Literacy focus from The University of Texas at San Antonio.

Favorite Memory: I have so many fond memories of my time growing up in Tyler ISD. From our Birdwell Elementary production of β€œThe Land of Jestures,” to home economics, shop class, and computer classes at Hogg Middle School, to my time in the International Baccalaureate program at John Tyler. I had so many great experiences over the years. One of my favorites was the trip to Spain I was able to go on with my high school Spanish teacher, Mrs. Nunn. We were able to tour places that we learned about in class, as well as putting our Spanish language skills to use!

What teacher made the biggest impact on your life and why? My favorite teacher in high school was Mr. Riley, our debate teacher. He was a great mentor who was truly interested in my academic success. Through debate, I developed critical thinking and analytical skills that extend far beyond the classroom. He taught me to find my voice - literally and figuratively. Through him I became a more confident speaker and leader.

Advice to current Tyler ISD students? Enjoy your time! Get involved, try new things, and surround yourself with good influences. Don’t be afraid to fail, but don’t forget to ask for help when you need it. Teachers and administrators are some of the most caring people and they’re there to ensure your success as a student.
