March is Womenβs History Month, a time when schools across the country recognize the important contributions women have made to our history, communities, and daily lives. At the elementary level, this celebration focuses on helping students understand that womenβpast and presentβhave been leaders, problem-solvers, creators, and helpers in many different ways.
Throughout the month, students may learn about inspiring women such as teachers, scientists, artists, athletes, community leaders, and historical figures who worked hard to make the world a better place. These lessons are shared through read-alouds, classroom discussions, writing activities, and art projects that are developmentally appropriate and engaging for young learners.
Womenβs History Month also allows us to promote positive messages about kindness, perseverance, fairness, and self-belief. Students learn that everyoneβregardless of genderβcan dream big, work hard, and make a difference.
Families can support this learning at home by talking with children about women who inspire them, reading books that feature strong female characters, or sharing stories about women in your own family and community.
Together, we can help our students grow in appreciation, respect, and confidence as they learn about the many women who have shaped our worldβand continue to shape their futures.
