valentine cards on desks

Students in Ms. Hines’ class at Moore Middle School recently turned their classroom into a hub of creativity and compassion as they participated in the annual Valentine card drive hosted by KVNE.

After hearing about the drive on the radio, Ms. Hines saw an opportunity for her students to serve others in a meaningful way. KVNE collects handmade Valentine cards from the community and delivers them to nursing home residents, veterans, and children in the hospital. Inspired by the mission, she set up a card-making station in her classroom stocked with paper, markers, stickers, and other supplies. Whenever students completed their daily assignments, they were invited to create cards. The class also dedicated an entire period to working on the project together.

The response was overwhelming. Many students created multiple cards, carefully crafting messages filled with encouragement and hope. Others wrote heartfelt, personal notes intended to brighten a stranger’s day.

β€œI honestly feel amazing making other people happy,” said student Yarectzy Martinez. β€œI love to comfort and make people laugh. It makes me feel proud knowing there are people out there having a good time with family and friends, also because we only live once in this lifetime.”

Ms. Hines shared that she has been deeply moved by the thoughtful words her students wrote to complete strangers. She believes the project has been a valuable learning experience, teaching students that regardless of their background or beliefs, they can show compassion to those who may be suffering, lonely, or experiencing loss.

The class delivered the cards to KVNE, confident that their small acts of kindness will make a big difference.
