Sixty Tyler ISD high school students kicked off the second year of the Future Leaders of Tyler (FLT) Program Thursday, beginning a year of leadership development, community engagement and career exploration.
A partnership between the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce, Tyler Area Business Education Council and Tyler ISD, Future Leaders of Tyler connects students with community leaders and professionals throughout the 2026–2027 school year. Students selected for this year’s cohort represent Early College High School, Tyler High School, and Tyler Legacy High School.
The program is designed to help students explore their strengths, expand their professional networks, learn about career opportunities and gain a firsthand understanding of the organizations and industries that contribute to the Tyler community.
“Future Leaders of Tyler gives students the opportunity to see leadership in action by connecting them with the people and organizations shaping our community,” Executive Director of the Tyler Area Business Education Council LaToya Young said. “We are excited to welcome our second cohort of 60 students and provide meaningful experiences that help them discover their strengths, explore career possibilities, build valuable relationships, and recognize the important role they can play in Tyler’s future.”
During the first session, students heard from Barbara Bass, community advocate and former Mayor of Tyler, and Dr. Kendra Bircher, Tyler ISD School Board Trustee. The speakers shared their experiences and perspectives on leadership, service and involvement in the Tyler community.
Throughout the year, students will participate in sessions focused on a variety of community and career sectors, including banking and finance; business, industry and economic development; education; healthcare; nonprofit and community impact; quality of life; local, state and federal government; and Tyler city government.
As Future Leaders of Tyler participants, students are expected to attend consistently, arrive prepared and on time, actively participate, demonstrate professionalism and complete program surveys and evaluations. Students are also encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, engage with speakers and take advantage of opportunities to connect with community leaders.
Future Leaders of Tyler is designed to be more than a series of leadership sessions. Through direct connections with local leaders and organizations, students gain a broader understanding of their community while exploring opportunities that can help shape their futures.
