coloring book

Tyler ISD's Career & Technology Practicum of Graphic Design students used Adobe Illustrator and limited tools within the program to create a custom coloring book for kids. Each page was custom designed by a student and put together by first year Graphic Design teacher, Mr. Sumrall. The lesson teaches students how to master the use of the pen tool, direct selection tool, Bezier curves, and the shape builder tool. These skills are highly sought after in the job market, align with standards needed during Industry Based Certifications, and help build student portfolios for future employment.

With the results and final product, other CTC teachers and even administration were inspired to build upon the project in coming years. Marketing teacher, Mrs. Tillson, immediately saw potential in creating page designs that paid homage to each of our CTE programs of study, but reflective of the coloring book style. Further, she stated the coloring book could be marketed as an item that could be sold to help with fundraisers. CTC Counselor, Mrs. Walker, saw the potential in printing these in mass to hand out to Tyler ISD 8th graders during the 8th grade exploration event held each year at the Career & Technology Center.

Being a first year teacher is not easy, but Mr. Sumrall has raised the game in the Graphic Design & Interactive Media pathway with projects like this coloring book. It is awesome to see the efforts inspire students, teachers and administration, especially near the end of the school year.
