Students in Miss Browning’s 4th grade science and social studies classes recently transformed their classroom into β€œInnovation Nation” thanks to a grant awarded by the Tyler ISD Foundation. The exciting project gave students a hands-on opportunity to learn entrepreneurship, teamwork, economics, marketing, and creativity through the creation of their very own businesses.

Working in teams, students developed unique businesses and created merchandise to sell to visiting classes across campus. Each visiting student received a ticket to β€œpurchase” an item from the business of their choice. Products included worry stones, tropical drinks, slime, paper airplanes, story puppets, face painting, custom bookmarks and cards, jewelry, keychains, nails, bandanas, stress balls, and seed pods.

To promote their businesses, each group created commercials advertising their products and services. Students even had the opportunity to pay to have their commercials aired during morning announcements. In addition, teams designed flyers and posted them throughout the school to attract customers and build excitement for their businesses.

Every business group was also given a budget, or β€œloan,” from the classroom bank. Students tracked profits and expenses while learning real-world financial concepts such as paying back loans, budgeting, and avoiding debt. Through this engaging experience, students gained valuable lessons in responsibility, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving.

Students also learned important financial literacy skills by understanding how loans and interest work, as each business group was responsible for repaying their classroom β€œbank” loan with interest while managing their profits and expenses.

Innovation Nation allowed 4th graders to experience the excitement and challenges of running a business while connecting classroom learning to real-world applications. Thanks to the support of the Tyler ISD Foundation, Miss Browning’s students were able to turn creativity and innovation into an unforgettable learning experience.
