The Boulter Middle School Cross Country team is experiencing record participation this season, with more student-athletes joining the program than in many years. According to Head Coach Florentino Guerrero, the growth is the result of a new philosophy and training approach introduced in July, along with strong support from parents, athletes, coaches, teachers, and administrators.
Coach Guerrero credits much of the team's success to clear communication with families and a shared understanding of the program's expectations. He also emphasizes the importance of faith and teamwork, believing that great things can be accomplished when everyone works together toward a common goal.
With more than 40 student-athletes attending early morning practices, the program is already having a positive impact on students. Coach Guerrero says cross country helps athletes build character, stamina, discipline, and conditioning, while also creating opportunities for participation in other sports later in the school year.
One of the most encouraging aspects of the season has been the enthusiasm displayed by the runners. From weekday practices to Saturday morning meets, athletes are building friendships, developing leadership skills, and enjoying the experience together. Coach Guerrero believes that creating a fun, welcoming environment is essential to a successful cross-country program.
The growing participation is also boosting school spirit and strengthening the overall athletic department. As more students join cross country, many are also branching out into other sports such as football and volleyball. Coach Guerrero hopes this momentum will continue, helping young athletes compete at higher levels while fostering a healthy, supportive environment.
"The excitement I see on a daily basis is overwhelming," Guerrero said. "Our athletes are having fun, creating friendships, and taking leadership roles. That's what helps a program grow."
As the season progresses, the Boulter Cross Country team is not only achieving growth in numbers but also building a strong foundation for future success across Boulter athletics.
