Students from Birdwell recently had the unique opportunity to step outside the classroom and into the heart of their community by attending the Public Service Recognition Week celebration hosted by the City of Tyler. The event provided an engaging and educational experience that allowed students to connect directly with the individuals who help keep their city running smoothly every day.

Throughout the visit, students were able to mix and mingle with a variety of city employees, learning about the many roles that contribute to the well-being of the community. From administrative staff to public works employees, students gained insight into how teamwork and dedication are essential in maintaining city services. These real-world interactions helped bring classroom lessons to life and sparked curiosity about future career possibilities in public service.
One of the most memorable parts of the day was a guided tour of the Tyler Police Department. During the tour, students explored different areas of the police station and learned about the day-to-day responsibilities of law enforcement officers. Officers took time to explain their roles, demonstrate equipment, and answer student questions, helping to build understanding and trust between students and local law enforcement.

Educators noted that experiences like this are invaluable in helping students see the real-world impact of civic responsibility and community service. By participating in events such as Public Service Recognition Week, students not only gain knowledge but also develop a deeper appreciation for those who serve their community.
The visit left a lasting impression, inspiring many students to consider how they, too, can make a positive difference in their city one day.
