Students in Ms. Suarezβs Pre-K class, alongside their aide Ms. Sandoval, brought their recent science lessons to life with a hands-on tortilla-making activity that blended learning, culture, and teamwork.

The experience built on last weekβs unit on plants, where students explored plant parts, learned how to care for them, and even grew their own to take home. As a natural follow-up, the class shifted its focus to corn, allowing students to see how what they learned connects to everyday life.

During the activity, students were introduced to the corn plant and its importance in cultural traditions. They learned about different types of corn and how it is used to create a variety of foods, including tortillas. The lesson provided a meaningful way to connect science concepts with real-world applications.

Beyond the content knowledge, students also practiced essential skills such as following directions, measuring ingredients, and working collaboratively as a team. The hands-on nature of the activity kept students engaged and excited throughout the process.

The highlight of the day came when students were able to taste the tortillas they made themselves, celebrating both their hard work and their learning in a fun and memorable way. π
