kids reading

At Birdwell Dual Language Immersion School, the library is much more than a place to check out booksβ€”it is a vibrant hub of innovation, creativity, language development, and hands-on learning for students.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Tyler ISD Foundation, Birdwell MTS Mrs. Kinney has been blessed with the opportunity to expand student learning in an exciting new way. Through the β€œPalabras That Speak” grant, the Birdwell library now offers bilingual audiobooks that support students as they strengthen both literacy and language skills.

These special resources allow students to do more than simply read words on a page. As they listen along, students can hear the correct Spanish pronunciation while following the written text in both English and Spanish. This powerful combination helps children build vocabulary, improve fluency, and make stronger connections between spoken and written language. For Birdwell’s dual language learners, these bilingual audiobooks provide meaningful support as they grow in confidence and communication.

Libraries play a vital role in a child’s academic journey, and Birdwell’s library is a shining example of how modern libraries can inspire every type of learner. In addition to promoting a love of reading, the library serves as a center for STEM activities, learning projects, and Makerspace opportunities that encourage students to think critically, solve problems, and collaborate with others.

Makerspace and STEM learning offer tremendous benefits for elementary students. Through hands-on exploration, students are challenged to create, design, build, and test their ideas. These experiences help develop important real-world skills such as creativity, perseverance, teamwork, and innovation. Whether students are engineering a solution, exploring science concepts, or participating in interactive projects, they are learning that the library is a place where imagination and discovery come together.

At Birdwell, the library truly reflects the school’s commitment to meeting the needs of the whole childβ€”academically, linguistically, and creatively. Along with the support of the Tyler ISD Foundation, Birdwell students are being given even more opportunities to grow as readers, thinkers, and future problem-solvers.
