Students in the 18+ program, CONNECT, are putting their skills to work through our new student-run iced tea cart, Buzzin’ Brews! This hands-on business gives students the opportunity to practice meaningful communication, vocational skills, math, and independence while serving iced teas to staff around the Wayne D. Boshears Center.
Students take part in each step of the process, from preparing the tea and filling customer orders to adding flavored syrups and delivering completed drinks. Following an order requires students to pay attention to details and follow a specific sequence of steps. Students also practice communication skills as they interact with customers, confirm orders, and deliver drinks to staff members.
Math skills are naturally incorporated into the process. Students count cups, measure ingredients, determine how many drinks are needed, and count the number of syrup pumps required for each flavored tea. These real-world experiences help students see how math is used in everyday life and employment settings.
Most importantly, Buzzin’ Brews provides students with an opportunity to develop confidence, responsibility, teamwork, and job-related skills in an authentic work environment. What may look like simply delivering a cup of iced tea is actually a meaningful learning experience that helps our students prepare for greater independence and success beyond the classroom!
