Beyond the Classroom

There's more to your high school experience than just academics.

We understand that the decision to attend Early College High School means there are things you may miss out on. While academics are our main priority, we do everything we can to make our environment fun. Let's take a look at what we do beyond the classroom.

Honor Societies

Our honor societies offer several benefits, including members-only scholarships, chances to gain leadership and academic experience, and mentorship and networking opportunities.

The National Honor Society

Our most prestigious honor society is The National Honor Society.  Students are invited based on their GPA.  Students need at least a 3.8 unweighted GPA to be invited as a sophomore and a 3.6 unweighted GPA to be invited as a junior or senior.  Students are accepted based on scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

Academic Honor Societies

We have four academic honor societies that focus on specific disciplines. Each have different requirements regarding GPA and participation.

TJC Intramural Sports and Fine Arts

We know that choosing Early College comes without some things you would otherwise experience at a comprehensive high school, like sports and fine arts. With our school being a dual-campus with TJC, students receive all of the benefits that are included with being college students.

Counseling

ECHS students participate in SEL Circles during advisory on all their ECHS days. Students have access to administrators and the counselor and can easily come to any of us with questions or concerns, unlike a typical High School.

We support and guide students as they work toward their academic and personal goals.

TJC Advisors

Our students have access to TJC advisors who are housed where they have their AVID classes on the TJC campus.  Advisors also come to ECHS each semester to answer questions about schedules, classes and majors.

AVID

When you are accepted into Early College High School, you are automatically placed in AVID.

Sources of Strength

Sources of Strength is a campus-wide health initiative that focuses on student leadership and positive relationships.

Unique Campus Events

We are proud that we make sure that we provide our students with some of the high school experiences that shouldn't be missed. We have our own unique version of Homecoming, Field Day, and Senior week to celebrate our graduates.

For many of these, we have dress-up days, door-decorating contests, assemblies with guest speakers, and special Friday schedules to accommodate extra activities.

Community Involvement and Service

Community service is done for AVID and to maintain TJC Promise status. We have many (what events) events on campus that the students help with after hours to get their service in. We also have opportunities outside our school, including working at football games for the other schools, selling chocolate for fundraising, and even participating in the GIVE program through the Women’s Fund of Smith County.

ECHS has helped the community by donating time at the local food bank, donating goods to nursing homes or for children with cancer, and organizing trash picks up in the neighborhood.

Summer Bridge

New Freshmen and Sophomores attend four days of Summer Bridge as an introduction to Early College High School and to get a jump start on TSIA2 testing. During our Summer Bridge program, we also have an extensive TJC tour for Freshmen.

Booster Club

The ECHS Booster Club serves as the school’s parent-teacher support group and coordinates fundraising and volunteer efforts to support the school academically and otherwise.

They devote time and money to support the students in all aspects of their education at ECHS and find ways to help make our school an enjoyable place for both students and staff.
