2020-06-17 Tyler ISD Superintendent Elected to UIL Legislative Council
Tyler ISD Superintendent Dr. Marty Crawford will join a select group of educational leaders from across the state in serving on the Universal Interscholastic League (UIL) Legislative Council. Elected by school superintendents, Dr. Crawford will represent Region II-6A through 2024.
“We have the best interscholastic league in the nation and I am proud to serve on their legislative council,” Dr, Crawford said.
The UIL exists to provide educational extracurricular competitive opportunities in academic, athletic, and music contests for K-12 students. The Legislative Council serves as the governing body acting on many proposed amendments under the UIL constitution, the rules of the State Board of Education and the law.
“I am excited to see that Dr. Crawford has been selected to serve on the Legislative Council,” Tyler ISD Athletic Director Greg Priest said. “Dr. Crawford is a huge supporter of extracurricular activities and it is great to have someone with his passion representing us.”
Of the 32 public school administrators elected to serve on the Legislative Council, 24 are elected by school superintendents, with a representative chosen from each of the six conferences in each of the four geographical regions of the state. The chair of the Council appoints eight members from larger schools to ensure a more balanced representation of student ethnic populations and women.
“In these unprecedented times, I anticipate we will be looking at making adjustments to UIL competition guidance due to COVID-19 as well as keeping interscholastic activities pure from the privatization of youth sports and activities, among other topics,” Dr. Crawford said.
Dr. Crawford also serves on the Texas Association of School Administrators Legislative Committee and will serve as the Region VII Representative on the Commissioner of Education’s TASA Cabinet of Superintendents for the 2020-2022 term.
