Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Orela Murgia
I teach 5th grade Reading and Social Studies. My undergraduate degree is a dual major in Spanish and Italian Studies from the University of Houston in 1994. Shortly thereafter, I began teaching English and ESL, teaching abroad and for HISD. Wanting to dedicate myself to bilingual education, I pursued a Master's in Bilingual/Dual Language Education from the University of St. Thomas, in Houston.
I believe that all students can be successful. My role model is Jaime Escalante, a Bolivian educator who moved to the U.S., taught himself English, and went on to earn his college degree. He taught his students that it did not matter where they came from, what their parents did, or what anyone told them - they all have the ability to be successful in school and have a chance at a career. I have always had this mindset in my teaching, and have taught almost entirely at inner city and at-risk schools. I work hard at finding different kinds of resources to help students to be successful.
As Jaime Escalante said, "The key to my success with youngsters is a very simple and time-honored tradition: hard work for teacher and student alike".
