Ms. Melba Williams

Hi...I'm the Art Teacher here at Peete Elementary.  I have been an Art Teacher since 2007.  I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education.  I have a Master's Degree in Reading.  Teaching my students is like coaching.  I teach the fundamentals, while challenging them to do upper level work at the same time I know they are capable of doing.  I give the students lots of practice while encouraging them to perform  their best and celebrate their success.  As a teacher, I want the students to learn and appreciate art and its history and to know that art is all around them whereever they look.  I feel that art is a subject worth knowing.  I want the students in my class to have a good understanding of the many forms art can take on, from drawing, painting, found objects, print making, etc., as well as the new non-conventional way to make art.  As a teacher I want to challenge my students to become independent, open minded thinkers.  I want them to be able to look at a piece of art work and form their own opinions and critical evaluation or analysis of the piece.

I wanted to become an art teacher so I could influence young students in a positive way,  to appreciate art.  I did not have an art teacher in elementary school and during my public school years to encourage my art making and broaden my scope of understanding of art and its history.  I want to give students an art education that I did not receive until college.  I hope that I can teach students something they will keep with them for a lifetime. My teaching approach will be modeling, coaching, and helping students become independent artists and art historians, so they can use the knowledge learned in my class and apply it to their future studies and life.  I believe art lets the students have the freedom  to explore without judgement and often without rules.  This lets the students develop an understanding that person success is ultimately the individual person's responsibility.  Art teaches that there isn't always a right or a wrong answer.  Through art education, I believe that a students inner curiosity can be turned on and matured to lead them in a lifelong pursuit of their own happiness.
