Advice and tips from parents who have “been there and done that”!!!
***Before signing up for a Dual Credit course make sure your student knows that he/she is enrolling a college course and that the grade earned in the course may affect their overall college GPA. Some colleges have a college GPA, which is your grade point average for all of the courses taken at that particular college, and then they also have a cumulative GPA, which is your grade point average for all of the college courses you have taken as a whole. In order to apply to a particular college (area of study) within that university—College of Business, College of Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences, etc.—there may be an overall college GPA requirement—ex.-a student may be required to have 3.25 to apply to the College of Engineering. The advice would be to make sure that you plan to work hard in Dual Credit courses and earn high marks. Also make sure you check with the college you plan to attend and understand how your grades earned in Dual credit courses will be used in calculating your college GPA. CE ***Get started on everything early! If you need financial aid file tax returns ASAP. Attend the FAFSA workshop at REL. Apply for scholarships early. MV ***I will be glad to help anyone with the NROTC or Army ROTC application process. AM ***Your scholarship chances are best with local scholarships and those offered by your chosen college / university. Apply for all of them you are eligible for. Don't let the criteria "financial need" scare you off; college is expensive for everyone and you may be the only one that applies! MLS
