6th Grade MathematicsIn sixth grade math, we begin the year with a brief review of elementary math computations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers). All students entering sixth grade math are expected to be proficient in multiplication and division facts. Therefore, no time is devoted during the classes to teaching these facts. However, students must know them in order to be successful. Sixth grade students learn addition and subtraction of decimals and fractions, geometry, area and volume formulas, probability, graphs, percents, integers, algebraic expressions and equations (introduction), ratios and proportions. Throughout the year, there is an emphasis on problem solving using the skills they are learning. Students are encouraged to be active participants in their education through a variety of activities and games. There is homework almost every night and two projects. |
