Sixth Grade Reading

Reading in the sixth grade is taught through many different methods.  The Accelerated Reading program is used to enhance comprehension through reading books of the student’s  choice.  AR points and quizzes count as daily grades.  Novels on tape are another source of gaining AR points and the students enjoy listening to the professional voice of a reader.

Book reports are typed on the computer and the template takes the student through a variety of reading and thinking objectives.  These are done as a Power Point presentation.  These projects are then shown on a large screen for our parents at the Exhibit Fair.

The teacher reads orally to the class each day and points out TEKS Objectives from the book that is being read so that the students can experience seeing the skills in a natural setting. This is called a read aloud.  Students read novels in small groups and the teacher goes to each group and guides the reading by pointing out reading skills in the text.

Skills games make learning the objectives fun and easy.  Many games are professionally made while others are teacher made to match the current skill that is being covered in class.
