Community & Service for 2007-2008

The Community & Service component of the Areas of Interaction is designed to involve students in new roles.  It aims to contribute to the student’s personal development by educating the whole child.  Students learn by doing real tasks that have real consequences and then reflecting on these experiences over time.  Service hours should be spent in activities where the student works cooperatively with other people.

All service hours should reflect activities that are initiated by the student and are done without personal gain or financial reward.  Examples of service include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Service at a government agency
  • Service to an arts program or agency
  • Service to the handicapped
  • Service to a religious organization
  • Service to the elderly
  • Service to an environmental group
  • Self-initiated projects that benefit the community
