SCHOOL HOURS

Regular School Day                  8:00 – 3:00

Classes will begin promptly at 8:00 A.M.  If your child arrives before 7:45, have him/her report directly to the cafeteria.  Students will be expected to read quietly while waiting for the 7:45 bell.

Children should be picked up by 3:15 each day.  Children left on campus after 3:15 will be seated in the cafeteria where parents will pick them up. The parents of students who remain on campus repetitively after 3:15 will be referred to Child Protective Services.

ATTENDANCE

All children are expected to be in attendance each day unless they are ill or a family emergency arises.  Please call the school office to report your child’s absence each day.  Children in grades K-5 must be in attendance 163 of the 177 school days in order to receive credit for the year.  When a student’s absence for personal illness exceeds 5 consecutive days, the student shall present a statement from a doctor verifying the illness or other condition requiring the student’s extended absence from school.   If students miss school due to a family trip, parents must notify the office in writing in advance of the trip.  The purpose of the trip should be stated.  If the trip is for a purpose other than a family emergency, an educational reason for the trip should also be included. When this correspondence is received in the office, preparations will be made for the student to receive an excused absence, and plans will be made for the make-up work.

All students are expected to arrive at school by 8:00 each day.  Tardiness interrupts the instructional time in the classroom; therefore, the principal and visiting teacher will contact parents of students who are habitually tardy.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Students are expected to have all school supplies at school every day after the first week of school.

Students should not bring toys, candy, gum, or other unnecessary items to school.  All unnecessary items will be collected and kept in Mrs. Moore’s office until May 29, 2003, when the items will be returned to parents.

BREAKFAST – LUNCH

Parents and students may pay daily, weekly, or monthly in the cafeteria for the meals.  If you pay by the week or by the month, please do so before 8:00 A.M.  Breakfast will be served from 7:30 – 7:45.  Each class will have a 30-minute lunch scheduled daily.

Breakfast     free
Lunch         1.50

No students will be allowed to charge any food for lunch, breakfast, or snack.

Parents are welcomed to eat lunch with their children.  Please ask your child to include your name in the daily lunch count if you plan to purchase a meal.  Adult lunches cost $2.50 (drink is included).  When you come to eat with your child, he/she may invite one friend to join you in the outdoor classroom or you may eat at your child’s table in the cafeteria.  If you choose to eat outside, please supervise your child and encourage your child to follow the rules for the outdoor classroom which include no running or throwing objects.

ENRICHMENT CLASSES

Our well-balanced curriculum includes daily P.E. classes and weekly music, library, and art classes.

P.E.   All students should participate in P.E. classes each day.  The P.E. curriculum includes grade level appropriate activities in the areas of fitness, exercise, sports, rhythms, and jump rope. If your child needs to be excused from P.E. for health reasons, please send a note to the P.E. teachers explaining the reason.  Please be certain that your child wears appropriate shoes to participate safely in P.E.

Library    Parents are invited to check out up to 2 books from the library daily from 3:00-3:45.  Those books should be returned within a week.  Students and parents are responsible for the return of or payment for all books that are lost.  Statements of overdue books will be

included in the report cards each six weeks.  Weekly library classes will be scheduled for Head Start, Kindergarten, and First grade students.  The Second through Fifth grade students will have access to the library each day from 8:00-3:00 for check out within our Reading Renaissance program and for research.

Mrs. Stenklyft and homeroom teachers will also schedule Second through Fifth grade library classes on a rotating basis throughout the year.

Music   All students will participate in Open House. Through this class, students will be exposed to music appreciation

Art Through this class, students will be exposed to lessons that provide hands-on learning of the art elements.

STUDENT INFORMATION

Please notify the school office when there is a change in either your address or home or work telephone numbers.  It is imperative that school personnel be able to contact you at any time of the day regarding the academic progress, health, or behavior of your child.

HEALTH INFORMATION

Andy Woods has a full time registered nurse on duty daily.  If your child is injured or becomes ill at school, she will contact you immediately.  If you cannot be reached, she will use the emergency contact information you have provided on the health card.  Please be certain that this information is current and correct.

T.I.S.D. policy requires that students who have a fever of over 100 degrees, who vomit, who have diarrhea, who have a communicable disease, or who have an unexplained rash, should be sent home from school.  Please do not send your child to school if he/she exhibits any of these symptoms.  You would not want your child exposed to possible illness.  Please extend the same courtesy to others.

The teacher cannot administer medication.  Only the nurse or other designated personnel may administer medication.  Prescription medicine must be in the original container with the child’s name, dosage, and current date.  A form must also be filled out and signed by the parent/guardian; this will be kept on file in the office.  Over-the-counter medications can only be given if accompanied by written instructions from a doctor.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

Communication between teachers and parents is an essential component of the educational

process.  Our General Conferences will be held September 10 for grades K-2 and September 12 for grades 3-5.  This conference is designed to acquaint parents with campus and classroom goals, expectations, and activities.

Individual conferences for the fall will be held on October 1 to inform you of your child’s progress during the first six weeks and answer any questions you may have.

Anytime you wish to conference with a teacher, please call the school office to schedule a time to meet.

MAKE-UP WORK

Students are required to make up work missed during an absence.  It is the student’s responsibility to ask the teacher for make-up work and complete the assignments within the allotted time.  The normal time allowed for make-up work is two days for each day of absence.  Special arrangements may be made with individual teachers in unusual circum-stances.  If your child is ill for more than a day and you would like to pick up his/her assignments, please call the office and your request will be relayed to the teacher.  In general, teachers can have assignments ready by 3:15.  Please do not disturb the class during the instructional day to ask for make-up work.

SCHOOL VISITORS

All visitors must report to the school office to sign in and pick up a Visitor/Volunteer name- tag to wear while on campus.  Please do not disturb a classroom without prior approval from the office.  Please limit classroom visits to 20 minutes.  As you leave campus, be sure to sign out in the office.

DRESS AND GROOMING

Students who dress neatly tend to perform

better academically.  Student appearance is

important and is a part of the high expectations we have for our students.  As a rule of thumb, any form of dress or hairstyle which draws undue attention to the student or interferes with the purpose or conduct of the school will not be permitted.

        Examples of clothing not permitted

        include cut-offs, short shorts, tube

        tops, halter tops, half-shirts, thongs,

        spaghetti strap tops, basketball type

shirts, sagging pants, or clothing with

        questionable print.

Shorts and skirts should be a reasonable

length, (three inches from the top of the

knee is stated in TISD policy).

Students are not to wear hats unless it

        is a designated hat day.

It is very important that students wear

shoes that are appropriate for play in P.E.

and on the playground.  Tennis shoes are

the best choice for these activities.

These are guidelines to help parents in selecting appropriate clothing.  Good grooming is a cooperative effort, and your support will help your child.  For a complete description of the approved T.I.S.D. dress code, please refer to the Student Behavior Policy manual.

EARLY PICK-UP

Every child should be in attendance each school day from 8:00-3:00.  If it is necessary to pick up your child before 3:00, please sign your child out in the school office.  We will then notify the teacher, and your child can meet you in the office.  This procedure provides safety assurances for your child and the school.  Please avoid checking your child out early unless an emergency arises.

STUDENT CONDUCT

Self-discipline is a very important part of your child’s learning.  We encourage you to help your child by discussing the value of our school rules.  With excellent behavior, a good attitude, respect for others, and the care of personal and school property, all of our students can make the most of each academic day.

The skills that will be taught and reinforced to help each child gain the greatest benefits from his/her education at Andy Woods are in our Code of Conduct:

In my words and actions,

1.  I will watch out for my safety and the

safety of others everywhere I go.

2.  I will show respect to others.

3.     I will be honest at all times.

4.     I will be responsible for my behavior and accept the consequences.

5.     I will be courteous by using good manners with all adults and fellow students.

BUS RIDING PRIVILEGES

Students who live in excess of two miles from our campus are eligible to ride the bus.  Students may not ride on any bus other than the one assigned.  Because school buses are considered an extension of the classroom, students riding district-operated buses are expected to conduct themselves appropriately.  Misconduct on the school bus is grounds for suspension of bus privileges and/or disciplinary action.  The TISD bus office phone number is  531-3623.  Please contact them directly if you have a question about bus service or routes.

REPORT CARDS/PROGRESS REPORTS

Progress reports will be sent home at the mid- point of each six weeks if your child is making a grade of below 70 or if your child’s grade has dropped more than 10 points in a subject.  You are asked to sign and return progress reports the next day.

Report cards are sent home on the Thursday following the end of each six weeks marking period.  Report cards must also be signed by the parent/guardian and returned to the classroom teacher as soon as possible.

TEXAS GRADE PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS

In 1999, the 76th Texas Legislature enacted a new state law that mandates new grade advancement requirements.  Its title is the Student Success Initiative.  This initiative mandates a new passing requirement for students in grade three during the 2002-2003 school year.  All third grade students for this year and beyond must pass the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) reading assessment in order to advance to the fourth grade.  The TAKS test will be given in the spring.  If a student does not pass the first administration of the TAKS reading assessment, a second opportunity will be provided before the end of the school year.  If a student does not pass the second test administration, the test will be administered a third time during the summer.  After each administration of the TAKS test, students who are not successful will be provided intervention strategies and accelerated instruction designed to help them pass the reading assessment.  If a student fails the third attempt on the TAKS reading assessment, the grade placement committee will meet and discuss the grade placement.  This committee (made up of principal, a teacher, and a parent/guardian) will decide by unanimous decision the grade placement of the student.  Only by unanimous decision of the committee, that the student is likely to perform at grade level after accelerated instruction, may the student be placed in the next grade level.

In the school year 2004-2005 and beyond, students in grade five will be required to pass both the reading and math sections of the TAKS tests to advance to sixth grade.  In 2007-2008 and beyond, students will be required to pass the reading and math TAKS tests to advance to 9th grade.  If you have any questions or concerns about this new legislation, please contact your child’s teacher or Mrs. Moore.

LOST AND FOUND

Please label all personal items with your student’s name.  Items lost and found on campus will be stored on the stage during each six weeks.  At the end of each six weeks, items will be displayed on the stage for 3 days.  All items not claimed by the Thursday of that week will be donated to our Andy Woods Clothes Closet.

TAKE HOME TUESDAY FOLDER

Each Tuesday, students will bring home a special Andy Woods folder of important information for parents. Please keep the information, sign as needed, and return needed papers on Wednesday.  Students who lose this Andy Woods folder will be charged $.50 for a replacement.  This folder will be a valuable communication tool between home and school.

EARLY ARRIVERS

Students who arrive on campus before 7:45 should report to the cafeteria.  Students will be expected to read and study quietly.  Be sure your child has appropriate materials to read or study if he/she arrives before 7:45.  If students choose to eat breakfast, they will eat at the assigned tables, clean up after themselves, and then move to their assigned grade level tables.

Teachers will pick students up from the cafeteria at the 7:45 bell to escort them to the classrooms.

CAMPUS USE OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL DAY

An adult must supervise students using the playground outside of the school day.  Students are not allowed to ride bicycles, skate, or skateboard on campus at any time.  This restriction is for the safety of our children.

ONGOING PROJECTS

Throughout the year, we will be collecting the “Box Tops for Education” that are found on many General Mills products. We send these “Box Tops” in and receive funds that are used to purchase student incentives.  Please remove these labels from the products, write your child’s name on the reverse side, and send them to school.  We will have a drawing each Friday.  The student whose “Box Top” is drawn will receive a treat.

We will also continue recycling aluminum cans throughout the year.  Please bring your cans and place them in the bins behind the cafeteria.

This recycling project protects our environment and supports our student incentive fund.

SAFETY AT DISMISSAL

Kindergarten students who are car riders will be dismissed each day at 2:45.  Those students who ride TISD school buses or day care vans will be dismissed each day at 2:50.  An adult will escort these students to the loading area.  Students who walk or ride a bicycle home will be dismissed at 2:55.  An adult will also escort these students to the appropriate crosswalk at the corner of Clyde and Pollard or Bain and Hudnall/Pollard.  Students who ride home in a car will be dismissed at 3:00.  Students whose classes are in the main building will be picked up on the Clyde Drive circle.  Students whose classes are in the portables or the fourth or fifth grade buildings will be picked up in the loading area on Hudnall.  Please be courteous and patient as we dismiss our students each day to ensure the safety and well-being of all of our students and staff.

WELCOME FROM MRS. MOORE

Welcome to all students and parents for the 2002-2003 school year.  We are set for a most exciting and productive year.

Parents, I encourage you to get involved in your child’s education this year by actively participating in school activities, reading with your child, and practicing other skills that they are learning at school.  We have many opportunities for parents to volunteer and help out during the school day and during the evening.

Students, I expect you to work hard, give your best every day, and be a good citizen to all those around you at school.

I am confident that as we all work together this school year, we will have the best year ever at Andy Woods Elementary School.

Thank you for taking the time to read this handbook.  Please send your student’s name with your signature that you have read this handbook together.  We will have several drawings for treats with the names that are brought to my office.

If you have questions or concerns about anything that happens at school, please call the school

office, 262-1280.
