History of W. A. Peete Elementary:

1930, Peete School, located in Southwest Tyler on West Connally Street, was built.  The original building consisted of four classrooms, a book room, and two restrooms.  In 1936, five classrooms were added to the campus.  Ten years later, three classrooms, the principal's office, a bookroom, and a cafeteria were added making a total of twelve classrooms.

In 1955, the W. A. Peete Annex was built.  It is located on the south side of the fourteen acre site between West Connally Street and Bellwood Road. Three classroom wings, each consisting of six classrooms, compose the main academic area.  The administrative-multipurpose area and the kitchen-cafetorium are separated from the classrooms, yet retain immediate accessibility with all areas.  Covered outside corridors connect all building units.

The school was named for the late William Anderson Peete, principal of the old West End School for Negroes.  Peete School has always taken care of the seventh and eighth grades as well as elementary pupils in the south and southwest end of Tyler until the construction of Stewart-Edison Academy.

There have been numerous educational programs added to Peete Elementary.  Our campus serves Head Start through fifth grade students.  Our campus population grew in 1997 with the addition of a bilingual program.

The following individuals have served as past principals of W. A. Peete Elementary:  W. E. Winters, Elmer J. Wynne and Therelee Washington, Sr.  Presently, Freeman D. Sterling serves as the school's principal.
