National Junior
Honor Society
Richard B. Hubbard Middle School
Article I
The name of this chapter shall be the Richard B. Hubbard Middle School National Junior Honor Society.
The purpose of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop character, and to encourage citizenship.
Article III
Section 1- The principal shall reserve the right to approve all activities and decisions of the chapter.
Section 2- The chapter advisor(s) shall be responsible for the direct, day-to-day supervision of the chapter and act as liaison between faculty, administration, students and community.
Section 3- The chapter advisor(s) shall regularly review each member for compliance with Society standards and obligations.
Section 4- The Faculty Council shall consist of five voting faculty members appointed by the principal. No principal or assistant principal may be included in the Faculty Council.
Section 5- The Faculty Council reserves the right to amend by-laws.
Section l – Membership in local chapters is an honor bestowed upon a student. Selection for membership is by a Faculty Council and is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, service, and citizenship. Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities.
Section 2
– The Faculty Council shall reserve the right to award honorary membership to
school officials, principals, teachers, NJHS advisors, or adults in recognition
of outstanding service rendered to the school in keeping with the purpose of the
National Junior Honor Society.
Article V
Section 1 – To be eligible for membership, the candidate must be a student in the seventh or eighth grade at Hubbard Middle School.
Section 2- Candidates must have been in attendance at the school the equivalent of one semester. Some candidates may be ineligible for induction because of the semester ruling.
Section 3
– Candidates must have a cumulative scholastic average of 93 or above in on
level or above level when the
final grades of all subjects are averaged for the sixth grade; plus, the average
of all subjects for the seventh grade must be a 93 or above. (The computation of the
final grade average will be dependent upon the spring induction date.)
Candidates shall then be evaluated on the basis of service, leadership,
character, and citizenship. Candidates must be good citizens. Over 4 points in
citizenship in the middle school years will disqualify a candidate. (N=2
points; U=4 points)
Section 4 –Selection for membership is by a Faculty Council and is based on outstanding scholarship, citizenship, character, leadership, and service. Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities.
Section 5- Candidates become members when inducted at a special ceremony.
Section 6- A National Junior Honor Society member who transfers from another school and brings a letter from the former principal or chapter advisor to the new school advisor shall be accepted automatically as a member in the school’s chapter. Transfer members must meet the chapters’ standards within one semester in order to retain membership. –
Section 7 – Members who resign or are dismissed are never eligible for membership or its benefits.
Article VI
Section 1 – The procedure for dismissal shall be determined by the Faculty Council in compliance with the rules and regulations of the National Junior Honor Society. A written description of the dismissal procedure shall be available to interested parties.
Section 2 – Members who fall below the standards, which were the basis
for their selection shall be promptly warned in writing by the chapter advisor
and given a reasonable amount of time to correct the deficiency in the following
reporting period. In the case of flagrant violations of school rules or civil
laws, a member does not necessarily have to be warned; a member who is suspended
is automatically dismissed unless overruled by a unanimous vote of the Faculty
Council.
Section 3
– Candidates must be good citizens. Over 4 points in citizenship in the middle
school years will disqualify a candidate. (N=2 points; U=4 points)
Section 4- No student who has ever been suspended from school will be invited to be a member unless there is a unanimous vote of the Faculty Council.
Section 5-No student who has been at Off Campus Discipline (OCD) or In School Suspension (ISS) or who has had excessive visits to the office is eligible to be a candidate unless there is a unanimous vote of the Faculty Council.
Section 1 – The officers shall be the president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer.
Section 2
–Candidates for office will be nominated and voted on by the chapter membership.
Section 3 – The majority of the votes cast shall be necessary to elect any officer. The chapter advisors shall count votes.
Section 4- The Executive Committee is composed of the chapter officers and the chapter advisor(s).
Article VIII
Section 1 – The executive committee shall consist of the chapter officers and the chapter advisor.
Section 2 – The chapter advisors shall have general supervision of the affairs of the chapter between its business meetings, make recommendations to the chapter, and determine and perform such other duties as are specified in the chapter bylaws.
Section 3
– The chapter advisors shall have the responsibility of ensuring that chapter
activities and procedures follow school policy and regulations.
Article IX
Section 1 – Chapter meetings will be held at the discretion of the chapter advisor(s).
Section 2 –
Special
meetings approved by the chapter advisor(s) may be called by the president, and
the presiding vice president may call committee meetings approved by the chapter
advisor(s).
Article X
Section 1 – Each chapter shall determine one or more service projects for each year.
Section 2 – All members shall regularly participate in these projects.
Section 3
– These projects shall have the following characteristics: fulfill a need within
the school or community, have the support of the administration and faculty, be
appropriate and educationally defensible, and be well planned, organized and
executed.
Section 4
– Each chapter shall publicize its projects in a positive manner.
Section 5
– Each chapter member shall have the responsibility for choosing and
participating in a service project that reflects the particular talents and
interests of that member.
Section 6
– Each member is responsible for a minimum of 6 community service hours per
semester; an adult, other than a parent, must sign notice of the service hours.
A community service project has the following characteristic: work done for any
non-profit organization such as hospitals, PATH, Salvation Army, church mission
work, schools.
Sections 7
– Members that do not participate in the chapter service project(s) or the
individual community service project hours will be subject to dismissal.
These bylaws may be amended at any meeting of the Richard B. Hubbard National Junior Honor Society by a majority vote of the chapter membership pending approval of the chapter advisors(s) and administration.
Article XII
Dues
Section 1 – Chapter dues are not to exceed $10 per year per member.. Each member may be assessed a nominal fee for an honor society T-shirt if the advisors decide that one will be purchased for the year.
Section 2 –
Dues shall
be payable to the advisors prior to induction.
