What is C.A.S.?
C.A.S. stands for Creativity,
Action, Service.
What does
C.A.S. have to do with me?
As you probably know by now, the
International Baccalaureate Diploma
Programme is a two year curriculum
incorporating 6 curricular areas, an
extended essay, Theory of Knowledge and
Creativity, Action, Service (CAS).
Therefore, it is a requirement that diploma
seeking students complete a minimum of 150
hours of C.A.S. in order to graduate from
I.B.
What does
Creativity, Action, Service mean?
Creativity: This aspect covers a
wide range of arts and other activities
outside the normal curriculum. This could
involve DOING dance, theatre, music and art,
for example. Commitment to learning an art
form is the goal.
Action:
Involves the participation in expeditions,
individual and team sports, and physical
activities outside the normal curriculum; it
also involves physical activity in carrying
out creative and service projects.
Service:
Service activities involve doing things with
others and developing a real commitment with
them.
Timing
Students should undertake CAS
throughout the two years of the Diploma
Programme. Each student is expected to
devote the equivalent of one half-day (about
4 hours) each week on CAS during the two
years of the Diploma Programme. A majority
of the CAS hours should have been spent in
activities where the student works
cooperatively with other people, such as in
coaching team sports, group planning of a
marketing strategy to raise funds, teaching
immigrants the local language, performing in
a band, or playing in a sports team for a
season.
When Are Final
C.A.S. Hours Due
You must show documentation of 150
C.A.S. hours by April 1 (or whatever school
day is closest to April 1) of your senior
year. C.A.S. hours that are not turned in or
properly documented by April 1 will result
in your removal from IB diploma status to
certificate status.
How Do I
Document My Hours?
Two forms are required to be
completed by students. The CAS activity
self-evaluation form (CAS/AEF) should be
completed at the end of each
activity/project, and the student final
summary form (CAS/SFS) should be completed
at the conclusion of the student's
participation in CAS activities. Form CAS/SFS
is a list of the activities/projects and the
student's critical reflection on the entire
CAS experience. This reflection sheet is due
by April 30 of senior year. Additionally,
students must develop and keep a CAS
journal/scrapbook that details what their
documentation forms contain. This includes
significant triumphs and struggles in CAS
activities as they occur. |
