Faculty Member's Son Honored

U.S. Navy Hospitalman 3rd Class Gregory G. Malone, of Flint, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for "superior performance of duties" while on duty in Iraq from 2004-05, the Navy has announced.  Malone, a Robert E. Lee graduate, is the husband of Jennifer Malone, teacher at Owens Elementary, and son of Sonia Lumley, teacher at PACE, and Glenn Malone.  Greg, still in the Naval Reserves, is youth minister at Sunset Baptist Church in Jacksonville.

His certificate reads, in part: "During combat operations on the Al Fallujah peninsula, a devastating mortar attack struck the company's command post, seriously wounding three Marines. Although in harm's way, (Malone) unhesitatingly treated the wounded Marines and played a vital part in their evacuation."

"During security and stability operations in Ar Ramadi on Jan. 14, 2005, he again distinguished himself by responding to an improvised explosive device attack on a coalition convoy. Having witnessed the attack, he quickly rushed to the scene where a Marine was seriously wounded, then promptly diagnosed and stabilized the Marine.

"His quick level-headed thinking facilitated the immediate medevac of the Marine and earned the personal gratitude of the division commanding general.

"Hospital corpsman 3rd Class Malone's professionalism, leadership and steadfast devotion to duty reflected credit upon him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the U.S. Naval Service."

TISD "Teacher of the Month"

Congratulations to Mr. Chad Miller, for being selected as the TISD  "Teacher of the Month!"

TISD Foundation Grant Winner--AGAIN!

Congratulations to our Child Care Center Director, Linda Hulsey, for receiving funding from the TISD Foundation for her  "L.I.F.T.--Literacy Intended for Toddlers: Baby's First Books" proposal.  She received the Bonnie Beall named grant for $999.35.  LIFT provides literacy training and children's books to parenting students and their children.

Emmett J. Scott Demolition

The Scott Cultural Center (formerly Emmett J. Scott High School), located next to the Alvin V. Anderson Educational Complex,  in recent years had fallen into a dangerous state of disrepair and had become a neighborhood eyesore.  Thanks to a grant from Tyler Pipe, the demolition and removal of the old campus is nearing completion.  The land is now the property of Texas College.  During the demolition, there was a serious mishap.  A backhoe operator narrowly escaped injury as his machine inadvertently fell through a basement sub floor, significantly damaging the equipment.

PACE students and faculty alike are thankful that the unsafe structures  are no longer near our facility.

KLTV Interviews Linda Hulsey, Child Care Center Director

Joan Hallmark and KLTV visited the PACE campus Child Care Center on October 17th. Showcased in the interview was the Early Reading Program.   Pace was recently awarded a grant to further stock the literature and manipulatives for the Early Reading Program (L.I.F.T).  This grant was written and submitted by PACE’s Early Education Director, Linda Hulsey.

Ms. Hallmark interviewed Mrs. Hulsey and one of the PACE parenting students participating in the early reading program.  Antoinette Moseley and daughter demonstrated the benefit of reading books with the use of learning aides.  The materials are available for the parents to check out for use at home.

Constitution and Citizenship Day

On Constitution and Citizenship Day at PACE we were honored to have Ken Good speak with our faculty and student body.  Mr. Good, an attorney with the law firm of Kent, Good, Anderson, & Bush, P.C.,  has been a lawyer in the Tyler area for 16 years and is Board Certified in Civil Appellate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.  Mr. Good began his career as a classroom teacher in Boyd, Texas where he taught for two years before attending law school.

Mr. Good began his remarks by asking the question, “Is it legal to burn the American flag as a form of protest against the government?”  The negative responses from the students prompted his explanation that it indeed is protected speech as decided by the Supreme Court and is part of the first amendment to the Constitution.  Mr. Good followed with a brief description of the Constitution as the basic framework for the United States Government.  Once finished, Mr. Good called for questions and all were soon enjoying a lively discussion and debate.

We greatly appreciate Mr. Good's taking time from his busy schedule to offer his wonderful presentation for Constitution and Citizenship Day.
