This project is designed for TISD students who have children enrolled in a TISD-sponsored childcare program.  They will be provided with books and/or props to check out and take home for the purpose of reading to their children at home.  In addition, reading professionals will conduct at least one workshop to train the young parents and caregivers how to read to the children in a manner that assists the child in listening and learning.  A library of books will be set up with appropriate props, and information will be made available to the parents about reading resources available in the community.  This program is funded by a TISD Foundation grant.

Reading to a child promotes proper development and prepares the child for an enhanced learning experience.  The teenage parent and the child will both benefit from parenting skills gained by the teenage parent.  According to the recent testing of TISD kindergarteners, 41.7% of those tested failed the mid-year Texas Primary Reading Inventory.  LIFT will provide increased exposure to the child's reading experiences.

The overall goal of LIFT is increased literacy of the pre-school child and improved readiness for the kindergarten experience.  A second goal of LIFT is to get parents involved with their child's learning process and promote parent-child bonding.

To be eligible to borrow books and reading props from the LIFT resource room, you must:

• Be a parent of a child attending the TISD Child Care Center.

• Complete the attached survey form.

• Keep a record of the time spent reading to your child (or other children in your home).

• Return the book and/or prop on time.  You are limited to checking out one book with the accompanying prop per check-out.

By following these simple guidelines, you and your child can have a wonderful time reading together.
