Dr. Bryan C. Jack Elementary

MORNING DROP-OFF/AFTERNOON PICK UP

School Hours

Instructional hours are 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Safety and security is of utmost importance in TISD and at Jack Elementary.  Due to the installation of security doors on our campus, all doors entering the building will be automatically LOCKED promptly at 8:00 a.m.  Any child or visitor entering school after that time (8:01 a.m.) must come to the front entrance and enter the office for a tardy slip or visitor’s badge.  This is the only access to our building after the 8:00 lock down.  The dismissal bell will ring at 3:00 p.m.  Kindergarten and bus students will be dismissed at 2:50 p.m.  Checking other students out early causes them to miss important information shared by their teacher at the end of the day and can disrupt the instruction in the classroom. We discourage doing this on a frequent basis.

Because we understand drop-off procedures and traffic can sometimes be a concern and can cause students to be late, we are opening our building as early as 7:15 a.m. instead of the district’s 7:30 a.m. opening.  Supervision will be provided in the cafeteria and gym.  All TISD students may eat breakfast for free. Students eating breakfast will report to the cafeteria no later than 7:45 a.m. The serving line will close at that time.  This will allow your child enough time to eat before the tardy bell rings at 8:00 a.m. All other students will report to the gym.

The first bell will ring at 7:45 a.m.  Teachers will be on duty to greet students at that time and to begin organizing their students for the day.  The tardy bell will ring at 8:00 a.m. Any student not in class at that time will be counted tardy. At that time, all exterior doors will be locked and instruction will begin.  Research tells us that time on task and quality instruction is the key to student achievement. Students entering class after the bell miss important announcements and could distract a class that has already begun.  We highly encourage you to have your child at school no later than 7:45 a.m. for the first bell.  This will allow for time in traffic and ensure that he/she is in class on time ready to learn.  Traffic tends to increase closer to 8:00 and could cause your child to be late. Please take this into consideration and allow plenty of time for your child to safely get to class by the 8:00 bell.

DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP PROCEDURES

We will use a ONE LANE procedure.  Students should be dropped off at PASSENGER CURBSIDE ONLY. Please do not allow your child to exit the car in the middle of the drive as this will create a safety hazard for him/her.  Vehicles will be asked to pull completely forward to the first available drop off marker.  These markers will be visible to all.  This process will enable us to move traffic in a safe and efficient manner.  Students will be able to use the sidewalk to enter the building through the front doors.  At pick-up, please place a sign with your child’s name in the front window.  We will have signs available to you to use at the Meet the Teacher night prior to the start of school.  You may also pick one up from the front office at any time.  This will enable us to more efficiently send your child to you when time to pick up.

KINDERGARTEN, 3RD GRADE, 4TH GRADE, 5TH GRADE

All K, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will use the FRONT entrance of the school.  Please place your child’s name in the front right hand side of your car window for pick-up.

1ST GRADE, 2ND GRADE

All 1st and 2nd Grade students will use the WEST parking lot for drop-off and pick-up.  Bus students will also be using this parking lot.  Therefore, cars will not be allowed in the parking lot until after the buses have picked up bus students in the afternoons.  Bus students are dismissed at 2:50 p.m.  From time to time, buses will run a little late due to uncontrollable circumstances.  Please pull completely over to the side when waiting in the drive.  Give plenty of room for the buses to enter so that they will not accidentally hit your car.  It is very difficult to maneuver a vehicle the size of a bus.  Please leave plenty of space in that entrance for your protection.  We highly encourage you to use the drive when picking up your students rather than parking and walking up to get them. This is for the safety of you and your child.  The line moves very quickly so the wait is minimal even if it appears to be a long line.  However, if you do choose to park, PLEASE use the sidewalk that was installed for you to walk on.  This means you will need to walk around the loading parking lot, but it also means accidents can be better avoided.  Cutting across the parking lot or calling your child over to do so creates an unsafe situation for all.  We appreciate your cooperation and will assist you in every way possible to quickly be able to leave when you are in a hurry.

BUS STUDENTS

All bus students are scheduled to arrive at school by 7:30 a.m.  This will allow any bus student plenty of time to eat breakfast if desired and still time to clear the west parking lot for car riders.  Bus students will be dismissed at 2:50 p.m.  Buses will park in the bus zones located in the west parking lot.  Once all buses have left, the entrance of the west parking lot will be opened for vehicles and day care vans.  This is to ensure the safety of everyone. Bus students will load the bus unless otherwise notified IN WRITING and signed by the parent to do otherwise.

STUDENTS WALKING

Students walking to and from school will need to use the crosswalks located at the corners of Rock Point Ln and Balsam Gap.  This crosswalk will have a city crossing guard and leads to a sidewalk all the way to the front of the building and the Northwest entrance of the building.  This is the safest route for any student walking to school.  There is a sidewalk that surrounds our field. Please be advised that construction is still heavy around the neighborhood surrounding Jack Elementary.  Please take every precaution to ensure your child’s safety if you choose to have him/her walk to and from school.

SIBLINGS AND CARPOOLING

Although we know this is not always a feasible plan for families, we do encourage carpooling when possible.  Fewer cars make traffic procedures easier to manage and keep the flow as smooth as possible.

If you have a child in more than one grade level that you are picking up that requires two different locations, please use the location designated for the youngest child.  Older students may be dropped-off or picked up with his/her younger sibling.  We prefer the older sibling meeting up with the younger instead of visa versa.  For example:  One child is in 1st grade and one child is in 5th grade.  Please have the 5th grader go to the west parking lot to meet his/her 1st grade sibling.  This will alleviate the need for you to go to more than one area to drop-off or pick- up.

PARKING TO WALK YOUR CHILD IN

We always want our parents to feel welcome on our campus.  Parents are allowed to park and walk their child to class each morning as long as it does not interfere with the safety of our students or the instructional day.  If you plan to do this, please take parking into consideration.  We do have limited designated visitor parking in the front parking lot.  However visitor parking in the drive in front of the school is designated for 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.  Please do not park in these places before or after those times.  Unfortunately, parking is not optimal.  If you park on the street sides, please take every bit of caution into consideration as you are walking to the entrance of the school.  Please also remember that ANY visitor entering the building after the 8:00 a.m. bell will need to check in at the office for a visitor’s badge.  You will want to come early if you plan to walk your child to class.  Teachers will be on duty to greet students at the 7:45 a.m. bell.

MORNING VOLUNTEERS

We are limited on supervision prior to 7:45 each morning in the parking lots.  We are counting on our parents to help us maintain a safe and orderly procedure each and every morning.  Following the procedures outlined above will help us the most.  These procedures were designed by a committee consisting of parents, teachers, TISD police representatives, and the city of Tyler’s Traffic and Engineering Department. They are subject to review after school has begun and procedures have been tried.

We need your help in other ways as well.  If you are interested in volunteering as a “door dad or mom”, we’d like to hear from you.   We are seeking volunteers to help us unload students each morning and move traffic in an efficient, safe manner.  You may contact the school or our PTA President, Marcie Determan, for more information. You can also fill out the attached sheet and return to our front office at Jack.
