Griffin Elementary School History
The Mamie G. Griffin Elementary School was built in 1959 in North Tyler at 3000 North Border Street on 5.07 acres of land This school was named for Mrs. Mamie George White Griffin, who was a teacher in Tyler and Smith County for forty-seven yeas. After teaching in the rural schools of Smith County for three years, she joined the faculty of the Tyler Public Schools in 1911, as a teacher in the East End School, later name Dunbar. In 1937, she was noted for her strong emphasis on citizenship as well as academics. The T.J. Austin School was always recognized for cleanliness. Children just did not walk over floors littered with paper during "Miss Mamie's" years as principal there. Mrs. Griffin was a long time member and an active worker in St. John's Episcopal Church. She was buried in Westview Cemetery and her portrait hangs in the local history section of Tyler Public Library. |
